A little while back, I was flipping through the latest Seventeen Magazine and this one girl, Asian with Rapunzel-long hair and a stellar sense of style, caught my eye. Jumping onto my computer, I typed into the address bar her blog domain and Art In Our Blood by Jennifer Wang popped up.
A California native, Jennifer began blogging in the beginning of her Junior year of high school. Since then, she has moved across the country to New York City to attend Parsons the New School for Design. She hopes to become a fashion designer with her own brand and work shown at Fashion Week. Being just a year below Jennifer, I must applaud her impressive success being featured in Seventeen Magazine, being able to collaborate Dahlia Wolf to design her own dress, and even scoring a Seventeen Magazine internship this summer! That is why, I emailed Jennifer a little bit ago to see if she could do a quick little Question-Answer-Interview session. (And the first three pictures above are some of her personal favorite looks! The last two are mine.)
1. How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Edgy, romantic, and monochromatic
2. What sort of people or things inspire you?
I’m always inspired by people who create their own success and take initiative. As for things, my taste is always changing but it’s often the textures and color combinations that will pique my interest!
3. Where are your favorite places to shop?
I love shopping everywhere online, but it’s also a great feeling when I find a designer piece when I go thrifting! Zara and American Apparel have a lot of great pieces too.
4. What is your favorite kind of dessert? (Random question!)
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to be working a job I love after I graduate. I will be living in New York City and I hope I can have started chiseling away at my college debt!
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
I usually spend most of my time on Skype video chatting my boyfriend to be honest haha but I’m hoping to devote more time to practicing my fashion illustration skills this summer, and getting back into reading for fun again.
7. What was your transition from California to New York like?
It was actually pretty tough, to be quite honest. California is so much more laid back, and NYC is so fast paced. There was also the typical college student transition of learning how to take care of yourself and do things that we may take for granted at home. At first I didn’t like the city that much but now that I have adjusted and gotten comfortable, I have grown to love it and all that it has to offer.
8. What is it like to go to college in New York City/ Go to college at Parsons the New School for Design?
There’s always a lot of walking involved, and as a Parsons student, we are often carrying the heaviest and most awkwardly sized art supplies haha. It’s pretty fun living in my own apartment now though since I moved out of the dorms! Parsons is very competitive but all in a good way. I’ve learnt a lot from my teachers but also from my talented peers and we all motivate each other to constantly push ourselves!
9. What is some advice or tips you have for beginner bloggers?
High quality photography is very important, especially with the competition today. A more simple outfit in a great photograph is going to get more attention than a more unique look in a low quality photograph. Photos are the first thing people notice (aside from an awesome blog banner) when they visit your blog, so you definitely want to constantly strive to improve the photography and lighting, and also the editing. Also, don’t worry so much about posting what you think other people want you to post. Post what you want to post and you’ll be able to find your own unique voice and you’ll also be much happier as a blogger in the long run.
Just a special thanks to Jennifer for this question-answer session! It was a great opportunity to talk to you and learn about your blogging/college life. You are such an inspiration to me and I hope that your fashion design dreams will come true! I will definitely keep following your blog and look for you during fashion week:)
